The U.S. is facing the worst blood shortage in recent years due to an overall decline in blood donations and other pandemic-related disruptions. For National Blood Donor Month, we’re encouraging everyone to learn the importance of blood donation.
Here’s some blood stats from the Association for the Advancement of Blood & Biotherapies (AABB):
- More than 16 million units of blood and blood products are transferred annually.
- More than 45,000 units of blood are needed daily.
However, due to the challenges of a blood supply shortage, some facilities have had to alter treatment or cancel patient surgeries. So, blood donors are needed across the country to ensure this lifesaving medicine is available wherever and whenever it’s needed.
