National Preparedness Month (September) is designed to promote family and community disaster planning. As part of this year’s theme — Disasters Don’t Wait. Make Your Plan Today. — Ready.gov has designated weekly activities to help families prepare for a disaster.
- Week 1 (September 1-5): Make a Plan. Discuss how you will communicate with family, friends and neighbors before, during and after a disaster. And build your plan specific to your family’s needs.
- Week 2 (September 6-12): Build A Kit. Stock your emergency kit with at least three days of food, water, medications and first aid supplies for each family member and pet.
- Week 3 (September 13-19): Prepare for Disasters. Research the risk of disasters in your area and sign up for emergency alerts.
- Week 4 (September 20-26): Teach Youth About Preparedness. Review your emergency plan with your children. And then practice the plan frequently.
