The SHINE (Special Helper in an Emergency) Award is presented to everyday heroes by their EMS Safety Services Instructor in recognition of their actions during an emergency.
Our most recent SHINE Award recipient is David Ortiz from Sonoma, CA,. While working at Bibbero Systems, David saw his manager collapse. He was quick to begin CPR and continued to provide chest compressions and rescue breaths for over 10 minutes. Medics were delayed due to another emergency, but eventually made it to the scene. During those 10 minutes, David kept oxygenated blood pumping throughout his manager’s body, and most importantly, to his brain. His manager was taken to a local hospital and has since fully recovered.
Considering the emergency personnel’s’ delayed response, if David had not performed CPR, without David performing CPR, his manager would surely have not survived. Paramedics and staff at Queen of the Valley Hospital credit the successful resuscitation and the manager’s full recovery to David’s actions and quality CPR training and technique.
David was presented with the SHINE award during a company BBQ. EMS Safety would like to thank David for his heroism. He’s an outstanding example of taking the initiative of learning how to help others and rising to the occasion during an emergency. If you would like to recognize someone like David, please fill out the Rescuer Narrative Form, and send your story to info@emssafety.com.
