2010 Guidelines

The release of the 2010 American Heart Association Guidelines for Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation and Emergency Cardiovascular Care marks the 50th anniversary of modern CPR. These guidelines are the result of a comprehensive evaluation and analysis of research and scientific advances. The good news is that very little has changed. Although the changes are minor, they were created specifically to save more lives.

FAQ's

What are the major changes?

Begin CPR with chest compressions: C-A-B: (Compression, Airway, Breathing)
Starting compressions first will provide sudden cardiac arrest victims with a better chance at survival by getting blood flowing to the brain faster. Studies over the last five years have shown that the A-B-C sequence can delay chest compressions, and delays to chest compressions reduce survival of sudden cardiac arrest. Rescuers will be trained to start CPR with compressions first.

Some of the other changes for Lay Rescuer and Professional Rescuer CPR include:

  • Compression Rate: Change the rate of compressions from 'approximately' 100 per minute to 'at least' 100 per minute
  • Compression depth:
    1. Change adult compression depth to 'at least 2 inches
    2. Change child/infant compression depth to 'at least 1/3 the depth of the chest'
  • 'Look, listen, and feel' removed from sequence
  • Cricoid pressure is no longer routinely recommended for use by Professional Rescuers/Healthcare Providers

There is no change to the compression to ventilation ratio of 30:2. Hands-only CPR is still recommended for non-trained or dispatcher-assisted rescuers providing adult CPR. The AED sequence has not changed. It does not appear that AEDs or AED trainers will need to be reprogrammed by the manufacturers.

There are also a few minor changes in first aid treatment that are more fully explained in our supplement.

Reminders for Instructors

  • Current EMS Safety Instructors can download the complete 2010 Guideline Overview on the Instructor Corner under the 'Training Updates' section in the 'Instructor Documents' category.
  • The publishing of the 2010 Guidelines does not mean that the 2005 Guidelines are no longer safe or effective.
  • Since all training materials and testing are based on the 2005 Guidelines, you must still use your current training materials.
  • If your students request to learn the changes prior to the release of updated training material, you may allow them to practice after class using the 2010 Guideline Overview document.
