IQ-01: Who needs CPR, First Aid, or AED training?
A: The Federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) requires many occupations to maintain current training in CPR and First Aid. Additionally, many employers want their employees trained, even if it's not required. Some industry examples include the following: construction workers/foremen, manufacturing, teachers and coaches, childcare employees, fitness trainers, lifeguards and boat captains, Emergency Response Team (ERT) members, church/community groups, healthcare workers and professional rescuers.
IQ-02: Are EMS Safety's CPR and First Aid programs OSHA compliant?
A: Yes. EMS Safety checks OSHA CPR, First Aid and Bloodborne Pathogen requirements regularly to ensure that our programs meet or exceed the standards. Although AED training is not currently required, it is recommended by OSHA.
IQ-03: How do EMS Safety's programs compare to others?
A: EMS Safety’s programs follow the same guidelines as other national programs. What sets us apart are the quality, ease-of-use, and cost of our training materials. Our programs are the best value in the industry and the easiest to use.
IQ-04: What if I have difficulty answering a student's question?
A: We will help you. The EMS Safety Instructor Manual is a complete resource beyond what is required in the course. If you can't find the answer to the question, give us a call, or email info@emssafety.com. EMS Safety has experienced Instructors and medical professionals on staff to provide you with an answer when you need it.
IQ-05: Will EMS Safety help me get classes to teach?
A: Instructors who are certified by EMS Safety are independent contractors and owners of their own small business. EMS Safety can help by listing you on our Find an Instructor web page, where Instructor profiles can be viewed and searched by location. Additionally, EMS Safety regularly provides listings of local Instructors to prospective students and organizations that are looking for training courses in their area.
IQ-06: What materials do I need to teach an EMS Safety course?
A: Each student should receive a course-specific EMS Safety student workbook for use during the course and to take home as a reference. Instructors need to show the appropriate EMS Safety training video/DVD during the course. After the course, students who pass are issued the course completion card within two weeks of the course. Other course-specific Instructor supplies include the following:
- CPR Course: Adult and infant CPR manikins, manikin lung bags and training shields, CPR Barrier Mask and Shield to demonstrate, appropriate disinfectant to clean the manikins, disposable gloves.
- AED Course: CPR Course supplies PLUS AED Trainer(s) and pads.
- First Aid Course: disposable gloves, gauze pads, roll gauze, triangular bandages, splints, epi-pen trainer.
IQ-07: How does the EMS Safety Instructor Manual help me teach the course?
A: Our Instructor Manual is second to none! It is a unique teaching resource that will guide you from course set-up to completion. It was developed with extensive Instructor feedback to be a comprehensive information resource as a complete lecture/activity guide. It details how and when to provide skills practice and training, and contains all your master forms.
IQ-08: Do I have to keep training records?
A: Yes. The Instructor retains the course roster, written tests and skills checklist for three years. EMS Safety may request rosters for quality control or to follow up on a complaint. The course is not valid without complete course records. EMS Safety does require two rosters for verification of having taught two courses when renewing the Instructor certification.
IQ-09: What is the Instructor-to-student ratio?
A: The maximum Instructor-to-student ratio is 1 Instructor for every 10 students (1:10).
IQ-10: Are there special rules for teaching daycare/childcare providers?
A: Yes, in some states. California is one of the most stringent and requires approval from the Emergency Medical Services Authority (EMSA). EMS Safety has a Pediatric CPR and First Aid course that has been specifically designed for the daycare/childcare provider. EMS Safety's program is approved in California for daycare/childcare providers. IQ-11: Does EMS Safety 'grandfather' certified Instructors from other organizations?
A: Yes. EMS Safety accepts cross-over Instructors with current Instructor-level certification from: The American Heart Association, American Red Cross, Medic First Aid, American Safety and Health (ASHI) and the National Safety Council. Qualified grandfather Instructors can teach EMS Safety's programs after registering as an EMS Safety Instructor. Contact us to learn more about grandfathering into EMS Safety's family of Instructors.
1Q-12: I'm a medical professional. Does that help me become an Instructor?
A: Yes. Certain medical professionals, such as EMTs, Paramedics or Registered Nurses who can demonstrate teaching experience and/or a teaching credential, can grandfather into EMS Safety's programs. Contact us to find out if you qualify.
1Q-13: What qualifications are required to take the Instructor course?
A: Instructor course candidates need to have current provider certification in CPR, First Aid and AED (optional) from an accepted agency. Medical professionals who need to take the course can substitute their training and current licensure for the First Aid provider certification.
IQ-14: I want to teach only CPR or only First Aid. Do I have to be certified as an Instructor in both?
A: No, but it is highly recommended. Many of the teachings overlap between the two programs. Furthermore, to meet their OSHA requirement, most workplaces request employee certification in both CPR and First Aid.
IQ-15: There is a student in my class with a disability, and he can't perform the skills adequately. Can I still certify him?
A: No. CPR/AED and First Aid certification requires that students pass both a written and skills exam. Students who cannot perform the skills are not issued a certification card. However, a person with a physical disability can perform many of the skills, as well as guide another rescuer through the steps. Even though a person may not be able to complete the certification requirements, the training is still highly valuable. Instructors can issue a course participation certificate to students who participate in the course but are not "certified."
IQ-16: Do I need liability insurance to be an Instructor?
A: No. Liability insurance is not required to be an EMS Safety Instructor, but it is recommended. EMS Safety refers Instructors to Lockton Risk Services or HPSO (for medical professionals) for insurance information and quotes.
IQ-17: I need help to become a better Instructor. What can EMS Safety do for me?
A: A lot. Our Instructor Manual alone is one of the best tools to help improve your instruction technique. Additionally, EMS Safety can help you network with other EMS Safety Instructors to provide opportunities to 'co-teach' subjects until you are proficient. EMS Safety can also coordinate an Instructor mentoring session between you and a more seasoned Instructor. The EMS Safety Instructor course is beneficial to both Instructor candidates and new Instructors who need practice with topic lecture or providing skills instruction and feedback. EMS Safety Instructors can also use our Instructor Forum to post discussion topics and questions.
IQ-18: How do I update my account and Instructor information?

IQ-19: What is the Return Policy?

IQ-20: A person in the course is coughing and sneezing from a cold. Should they participate in the course?
A: No. Persons who are sick at the time of the course will need to reschedule their training for another day so that others in the course are not infected.
IQ-21: Do I have to teach both CPR and First Aid in the same course?
A: It's up to you! EMS Safety programs include CPR and First Aid only courses, as well as a combined CPR/First Aid course. We also have AED and Bloodborne Pathogens programs that can be taught separately or and combined with CPR and First Aid.
IQ-22: I want to be an Instructor. What if I have no teaching experience?
A: EMS Safety takes Instructor training seriously, and we will help you obtain the basic skills needed to become a great Instructor. We strive to produce 'top notch' Instructors by arming candidates with excellent resources and training them in real-world scenarios. During the Instructor course you'll use the same instructional materials, visual aids and handouts that you will ultimately use during your courses. You'll practice giving the lecture topics as well as giving evaluation and feedback to 'students' during skills practice scenarios. You’ll receive feedback from your Instructor Trainer and have an opportunity to see the positive teaching aspects of other Instructor course candidates. You will know which areas you need to work on most to become a competent Instructor. Some of our most successful Instructors have had no formal teaching experience prior to taking the EMS Safety Instructor course.
IQ-23: How long is the Instructor certification good for?
A: Instructor certifications are valid for two years. To renew, Instructors submit copies of two completed course rosters.
IQ-24: How long has EMS Safety been around?
A: Over 15 years. EMS Safety was incorporated in 1993. We started in California and have grown nation-wide. Our programs are approved by numerous Federal, State and Private Organizations.
IQ-25: Can I teach Health Care Providers or Professional Rescuers?
A: Yes. EMS Safety has a CPR and AED for Professional Rescuers training course that is designed for professional responders. Be sure to check with your local EMS Agency or Hospital Educator to ensure the EMS Safety program is accepted.
IQ-26: What is the Instructor's Corner on your website?
A: The Instructor's Corner is a special area on the EMS Safety Services website for certified Instructors. You can update and manage your profile for the Instructor Look-Up page, update your account information, and join other Instructors on the Instructor Forum. The Instructor Forum is a meeting place for Instructors to network, discuss important topics, ask questions or give advice on situations that are common to Instructors.
